Our new normal - kitchen Island is the new dining room table, and our table is now a split desk - @r.e.hawse is about to start penning the second book of his trilogy and me, I’m happy to be speaking to my clients safely from home. Technology definitely is an asset in making this all work. From Zoom call board meetings to FaceTime multi chats with family to spending more time, attention and care on meal prep as well maintaining elements of safe physical activity. I’ve had the sense for a few days now that it would be helpful for me to intentionally cultivate a daily routine that allows room for meaningful engagement. What I mean by that, it’s really easy to succumb to anxiety and helplessness on the bigger picture here but with a mindful and deliberate practice of staying in the now... Grounding and paying good attention to the things we can control (our sleep wake schedules, meal, activity and self care, intellectual stimulation, and emotional connections) we will have a chance to consistently contribute to our personal resilience. As one Mad-eye Moody once said, “Constant Vigilantes”. We are in this together, we can take comfort in that the collective is stronger together than divided. I realize in life it’s not a great idea to try and go back to things. We are supposed to be moving forward right? Evolving and growing.
Well, I would like to move forward but I do want some things from the past- back... This picture was taken 3 winters ago. 20 k skate completed and full of energy. Very usual activity for me. I am looking forward to a new and improved version of that going forward.
What’s not usual is this: It’s not normal for me to have no energy. It’s not normal for me to faint or have numb arms, or get exhausted going up stairs. It’s not normal for me to feel drained at 5 pm with absolutely no energy to even manage a proper evening routine. It’s not usual for me to put off working out or being social or keeping up with the people I care about. All my energy has gone into working as I prioritized that as my essential and everything else, slid. Someone once said life is like a three legged stool - family, career, health. When one is off balance it’s gets a little wobbly. This has been my life for a few years now utterly wobbly. I kind of brushed it off as having unusually high levels of stress. Moving, managing a super stressful project, changing career directions, going back to school, family management, life was busy for sure but basically I lost my self down a dark and deep rabbit hole of anemia and exhaustion. O-M-G. Enough. We are our own best advocates when it comes to our health. No one will champion for your health better than you. Listen to what your body is telling you, and then fight to have it heard. Even if no one is listening at first. It’s funny how the universe works sometimes in my case, I didn’t advocate for myself very well and the universe stepped in with an ultimatum. I am now 3 days post surgery that honestly likely saved my life. Certainly saved the quality of my life. If you needed to hear this today, this message is for you. If you have a health issue that is impacting your life, but you are too exhausted to fight for yourself - ask for help. 💕 .
